Chattanooga's Creative Discovery Museum
Celebrates Its 12th Birthday
with "Alice's Wonderland -- A Most Curious Adventure"

* Mad Hatter Leads Preview of Exhibit Assembly, May 22
* Full-Exhibit Media Preview, May 25
* Grand Opening with Cake & Mayfield Ice Cream, May 26

On May 26, Creative Discovery Museum celebrates its 12th birthday with the opening of a new temporary exhibit, "Alice's Wonderland -- A Most Curious Adventure." This interactive exhibit based on the classic children's book builds imaginative fun out of science. It will continue at the Museum through Sept. 4.

Birthday festivities on May 26 also include cake and ice cream. Beginning at noon and while quantities last, Mayfield Moms will be on hand serving Mayfield ice cream. Birthday cake will be cut and served at 1 p.m. These treats will be served on the plaza outside the Museum, or inside if the weather does not cooperate.

Birthday preparations actually begin a few days before opening day, with two unique media opportunities and a media preview of the entire exhibit.

On Monday, May 21, under the supervision of the Mad Hatter himself, a construction crane will lift big, brightly wrapped birthday presents up to the roof of Creative Discovery Museum. These 43 crates contain all the parts for the Alice exhibit. Once they are on the roof, Museum staff will begin opening these oversize birthday presents to begin assembling more than 30 hands-on participatory exhibits. Media are invited to this unusual photo op from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.

On Tuesday, May 22, cranes will continue to lift crates up to the roof, but the photo op action shifts inside the building, where the Mad Hatter will again be on hand to show off the first few learning stations that Museum staffers have put together and to help them talk about how exhibits are put together. Media are invited to this opportunity from 1 p.m. - 3 p.m.

Cranes will be working most of the day on Monday and Tuesday, but the Alice exhibit will not be ready for the public to enter at that time.

On Friday, May 25, media are invited to preview the entire exhibit at any time during regular Museum hours, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Alice's Wonderland is sponsored at Creative Discovery Museum by Little Debbie Snack Cakes®, Baylor School, and Allied Arts of Greater Chattanooga.

Creative Discovery Museum is open Mon-Sat: 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Sun: noon-5 p.m. Tickets: $8.95 for children and adults. 321 Chestnut Street. For more information, call (423) 756-2738, or visit www.cdmfun.org.

The Alice’s Wonderland exhibit was created and is circulated by Children’s Discovery Museum of San Jose, California, with major funding from the National Science Foundation and the MetLife Foundation. Opinions expressed are those of the authors and are not necessarily those of the Foundations. Alice’s Wonderland will travel to children’s museums and science centers throughout the nation for four years. An interactive story based on the exhibit can be found on www.cdmfun.org.
