Children Just Like Me
Celebrates Diversity by Exploring Similarities
Come
celebrate the world's children with us! Children
Just Like Me opened at Chattanooga’s Creative Discovery
Museum on Saturday, January 28, 2006, kicking off the Museum’s
Year of Cultural Diversity. The exhibit showcases the unique
diversity of the world’s children while also studying
the common bonds they share. The exhibit is touring for five
years to 15 cities across the US.
Based
on DK Publishing’s award-winning book by the same title,
Children Just Like Me™, examines the lives of 11 children
from around the world. Young visitors meet their peers from
six continents and learn about each child’s daily activities
through self-paced, hands-on activities.
At
the entrance of the Children Just Like Me exhibit
is a large globe, which pinpoints the location of each child
featured in the exhibition. The globe allows visitors to make
relational comparisons through geography.
Within
the exhibit, compelling life-size cutouts stand alongside
three-dimensional representations of the children’s
homes and surroundings. Guests compare common activities and
objects, as they discover a variety of languages, foods, games,
pets and clothing and much more through multi-sensory interactives.
To
enhance the “around-the-world” experience in Children
Just Like Me, visitors receive a passport, which can
be stamped after completing an activity at each vignette.
Self-paced, hands-on activities in each vignette strengthen
cross-cultural connections.
While
learning about Mohammed, a nine-year-old boy living in Cairo,
guests explore occupations from around the world by typing
in what their parents do and what they want to be when they
grow up. To receive a stamp from northern Canada, children
practice math skills with eight-year-old Levi.
Children
Just Like Me teaches a wonderful message of inclusion
and cross-cultural understanding to young children—a
powerful lesson for the entire family given the current political
climate in the world.
This
exhibit is locally sponsored by Baylor School, WTCI PBS Channel
45, and the Children’s International Summer Village.
The exhibit was created by the Cincinnati Museum Center at
Union Terminal.
