This Is Our Land: Discovering America and the World through Original Illustrations from Children’s Books

Creative Discovery Museum and
Hunter Museum of American Art

Chattanooga, TN — This Is Our Land: Discovering America and the World through Original Illustrations from Children’s Books includes 80 original artworks by 80 well-known illustrators depicting pastimes and natural wonders form all 50 US states, together with images of life in 20 countries around the world. Its theme is “exploration of place”, discovering a neighborhood, learning about nature, exploring one’s roots locally, or finding America and the world through travel.

This Is Our Land will be on view at Creative Discovery Museum and Hunter Museum of American Art beginning November 18, 2006 through January 4, 2007. The exhibit will be divided alphabetically by state between the two museums, with the depictions of Alabama through New Jersey being on display at the Hunter Museum. CDM will be displaying the images from New Mexico through Washington, D.C. and the 20 countries.

The exhibit will aid in promoting the value of geographical knowledge, while encouraging a lifelong love of reading. This Is Our Land is sponsored locally by Chattanooga Association for the Education of Young Children, United Way of Greater Chattanooga, and Project Ready for School. This exhibit is organized by Meridian International and has been made possible in part through the generous support of Stephen O. Lesser of Los Angeles, with additional support from the Center for the Book at the Library of Congress, Washington, DC.

CDM Background:
Creative Discovery Museum is recognized as one of the top children’s museums in the nation. It is a non-profit educational organization dedicated to educational enrichment for children ages 4-months to 12-years-old through interactive, hands-on experiences that foster creative and critical thinking. CDM focuses on a broad range of areas encompassed by Visual Arts, Performing Arts, Technology and the Sciences. In addition to its exhibits, CDM provides local residents and visitors with special events, educational programming, teacher resources for the classroom, field trips, after school programming, early childhood education classes, artist residencies, camps, art lessons, science demonstrations, and a branch of the local library. Creative Discovery Museum is a funded agency of Allied Arts and Tennessee Arts Commission.

Creative Discovery Museum is a non-profit, educational organization dedicated to the enrichment of children through interactive, hands-on experiences that foster creative and critical thinking. Creative Discovery Museum is a funded agency of Allied Arts. ?September through February, the Museum is closed on Wednesdays, open Sundays from noon to 5 p.m., and opens 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. all other days. ? March through May, the Museum is open noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Memorial Day through Labor Day, the Museum is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days each week. ?The Museum is closed Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day. Ticket prices are $7.95 for adults and $6.95 for children ages 2 to 12. The last ticket is sold one hour prior to closing. Family memberships with unlimited visitation are $70 annually.
