July 26 - 27 is Honey Harvest Time
at Creative Discovery Museum
Eighth Annual Honey Harvest Means Honey Fresh from the Museum's Hive, Honey from around the World, Honey Crafts, and Beekeepers in Funny Suits!
Did you know that Creative Discovery Museum has a hive full of bees year round? Now the honey is ready, and children and adults can participate in the Museum's eighth annual Honey Harvest, July 26-27.
"People love to watch the extraction sequence, which is removing part of the honey comb from the hive and then spinning the comb to extract the honey. That's followed by tasting of course," said Erica Campbell, Science Manager for Creative Discovery Museum. "People can ask the beekeepers questions over the radio, like why are you using smoke? Or why aren't you wearing a special suit? Beekeepers often work without gloves or suits."
"People are always surprised by how different the honeys from around the world taste, because they are made by bees that visit different trees and flowers that we don't have here," added Campbell.
During this Museum wide celebration guests will learn about the art of beekeeping, observe beekeepers working in the hive, see how honey is extracted from the comb and taste different honeys from around the world. In the atrium guests will learn about the many uses of honey, beeswax, and pollen. Kids can roll their own beeswax candle, create honey lip balm and make honey soap.
All activities (which are free with Museum admission) will be from 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. in the Museum Atrium. At 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. beekeepers from the Tennessee Valley Beekeepers Association will visit the hive to extract honey and will be on hand to talk about bees and beekeeping. A small demonstration hive also will be inside the Museum, with the bees sealed inside.
Now Open Summer Hours, June 21, 2008 - August 10, 2008. The Museum is now open every day (Monday through Sunday) from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Regular hours will resume on Monday, August 11, 2008.
Creative Discovery Museum is located at 321 Chestnut Street in downtown Chattanooga. For more information, call (423) 756-2738.
