Ripe and Ready to Eat! Farmers’ Market
at Creative Discovery Museum Saturday, May 8
(April 26, 2010) - - A rainbow of tasty fresh fruits and vegetables will fill Creative Discovery Museum’s Plaza on Saturday, May 8 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. As part of the Museum’s featured exhibit, Good For You: Healthy Fun on the Run, the Museum is hosting its first ever Farmers’ Market. In addition to the wide variety of produce for sale, there will be food demonstrations, planting activities, and even food artisans to introduce children and adults to the ease and fun of making healthy food choices. The exhibit, Good For You, was produced by Creative Discovery Museum with a major gift from BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee Health Foundation and funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
Produce will be provided and sold by up to five different local farms. In order to help the community learn more about healthy and sustainable food options in Chattanooga, educators will demonstrate how to incorporate fresh and healthy foods into daily cooking. There will be two mobile kitchen units where guests may watch and learn how some of the produce purchased at the market can be prepared at home.
Professionals from TasteBuds Local Food Guide will share their expertise of local farms and locally grown produce resources. Plus, Hamilton County Step ONE will share information about making healthy food choices at home, school, and in restaurants.
Kids will also get to participate in a seed planting activity sponsored by GreenLife Grocery that includes a take home product, and food artisans will inform guests about food establishments that use local produce and employ sustainable practices.
“Farmers’ Markets are great ways to introduce kids to the wonders of fresh produce,” states Dr. Jayne Griffin, Creative Discovery Museum’s Director of Education. “The CDM Farmers’ Market provides a wonderful opportunity for the whole family to experience the art and science involved in the process of taking food from seed to table. Even the little guys will enjoy the colors, smells, tastes and sounds of this special Farmers’ Market since it includes food tastings, cooking demonstrations, seed plantings, and buying opportunities!”
