Marathon Badge Earning Opportunity for Girl Scouts at Creative Discovery Museum

(July 19, 2010 – Chattanooga, TN)  Creative Discovery Museum (CDM) will host Girl Scouts and Brownies from around the region for an after-hours “badge earning marathon” July 19 - 23.  From 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. each evening, 26 girls from troops in the Tennessee and Georgia area will participate in uniquely designed activities that give them the opportunity to experience the Museum like no one else can while earning an extraordinary 10 badges in one week.

Badges will be earned through completion of activities at stations located throughout the Museum.  Brownie Scouts must complete 4 activities to earn one badge, while the Junior Scouts will accomplish 6 tasks to earn one badge.  Each evening will be a flurry of action, as girls will be completing a total of 40 and 60 activities over the course of the week.

A few of the pursuits included are learning about fossils and rocks in Excavation Station, weaving in the Art Studio and cooking Brownie Soup in the Culinary Corner.  Led by CDM Educators in the Museum’s StarLab, participants will get to learn more about astronomy, as well as how the constellations reflect Greek mythology.  Girls will get hands-on experience with magnets, explore nature, experiment with static electricity, and go on a Science and Technology Hunt where their deductive reasoning and scientific know-how will be put to the test as they search for items made of plastic or metal, things that move in a circle, or something that comes from the earth.

Troop 40109, will have their entire Junior Scout group in attendance.  Their service unit is called Vallihi, and it serves girls in Hixson, Soddy Daisy and Sale Creek.  One of the girls attending this special badge-earning week is top cookie seller, Gabby Logsdon.  Gabby excelled in the Scouts with a total of 1500 boxes sold.

“We’re excited to welcome these girls to the Museum,” states Lynne Mulligan, Program Manager at the Museum.  “They possess such energy for learning, and we want to offer them one-of-a-kind experiences that will reinforce the opportunities for achievement offered through the Girl Scouts.”
