This is Not a Pipe Dream Play Featured at Creative Discovery Museum
Surrealist Inspired Play by Ensemble Theatre of Chattanooga
July 31 at 2 p.m.
(July 22, 2010) – Creative Discovery Museum will host a dramatic performance like no other, This is Not a Pipe Dream, on July 31 at 2 p.m. in the Museum Auditorium. With energy and humor, The Ensemble Theatre of Chattanooga will bring to life the whimsy and imagination of surrealist painter, Rene Magritte, in this theatrical production.
“This play is a great way for families to learn about a specific artist and art form while at the same time appreciating a fun and lively dramatic piece,” states Liza Blair, Arts Manager for Creative Discovery Museum. “The content of the play is so dynamic that it can be appreciated on a number of levels, plus gives the audience something meaningful to think about after the curtain closes.”
The name of the play is inspired by one of Magritte’s most famous illustrations of a pipe with the message “This Is Not a Pipe” written in French. The production, written by Barry Kornhauser, plays on the notion that changing perspective can transform the ordinary into extraordinary. While younger audiences will enjoy the humorous antics, older audiences will also get insights into the famous painter and be introduced to subjects of reality and illusion, words and their meaning, and the nature of art.
The Ensemble Theatre of Chattanooga includes six wacky actors who attire themselves like Magritte’s anonymous man and capture the dreamlike quality of Renee Magritte’s paintings, while employing elements of slapstick humor that audiences age 5 – 95 will find irresistibly funny. The production is under the direction of Garry Lee Posey and features Ryan Laskowksi, Timothy James, Kandace Shipley, Cody Keown, Ellen Poole, and Taylor Williams.
