(June 8, 2010) – Kids dream of more than castles in the sand at Riverbend Beach. For the second year, Tennessee Valley Federal Credit Union has invited fellow partners, including Creative Discovery Museum, Monteagle Sand Company LLC, the DoubleTree Hotel Chattanooga, and WDEF Channel 12, to bring the beach and unique beach-style fun to the Riverbend Festival. In addition, to the giant sand box with children’s activities, professional sand artists from Team Sandtastic will create astounding sand sculptures and a variety of other Riverbend performers and musicians will entertain guests at Creative Discovery Museum on June 12 and 18.
“We’re excited that TVFCU is providing us the opportunity to bring hands-on activities for kids to Riverbend Beach,” states Henry Schulson, the Museum’s Executive Director. “While kids can enjoy watching professional artists at work, we can also offer them fun ways to participate by making their own extraordinary creations.”
As part of the nightly festivities at Riverbend Beach, the Museum will host an area complete with shovels, pales, and rakes for children and families to play in the sand. Beach goers may get a souvenir photograph taken which will be posted for viewing via WDEF Channel 12’s website. Plus, children will get to paint a collaborative, 3’ x 5’ mural masterpiece with what else, but a beach theme. There will be a total of 4 murals painted throughout the week long event.
In addition, the fun of Riverbend Beach will extend up the street as the Museum hosts its own talent exposition in conjunction with the festival. On June 12 at 2 p.m., Riverbend Artist “That 1 Guy” will perform in the Museum’s Atrium. This funky, fun performance is presented with one man creating sound using a specially made organ pipe, part electric guitar, part synthesizer, and part stringed instrument. This unique show is free with paid admission to the Museum.
“That 1 Guy is a totally awesome experience,” states Liza Blair, Museum Arts Manager. “From beginning to end, the sounds and energy of the performance are something kids and adults will really enjoy.”
Also at the Museum on June 18 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., professionals from Team Sandtastic will show Museum visitors on the Plaza sculpturing techniques that enabled them to create the sand masterpieces vividly depicting Riverbend’s Coca-Cola Stage artists. Also performing at that time will be Magician, Barry Manley; Balloon Artist, Mike Edwards; and a performance by the Island Steel Pan Band. The Island Steel Pan Band is a family band playing traditional instruments found in Tobago, St. Croix, and Trinidad.
“Island Steel Pan Band is Chattanooga’s only Caribbean influenced band playing traditional island music. The group’s energetic sounds is sure to have kids dancing and parents moving,” states Mrs. Blair.
