Club Discovery (Club D) is a free, inclusive, after-school program designed to engage children (with and without special needs) through creative exploration. Museum staff will guide children through the learning process by exploring the art and science Museum exhibits. Program goals include providing opportunities to children, and helping children with different skill-sets become comfortable in a museum environment.
We work to include children who might not otherwise have the opportunity to participate in a Museum experience or go on local field trips. Museum experts engage Club D members in activities designed to enhance team building and increase personal discovery, attributes that will help them increase self-esteem and self-pride.
Club D will have achieved its goal when the children with and without special needs learn to be comfortable and confident when they visit and explore any museum environment. Each year, after completing Club Discovery's program, participating children will receive a one-year family membership to the Museum. As members, you and your family may continue to visit the Museum and build on the educational foundation that was laid during the program.
Space is limited. To begin the application process, call Nancy at (423) 648-6045 or Beth at (423) 648-6040.
This year, we will explore different types of books, food, and transportation throughout the year.
FALL 2008 - Bookworms & Tale Tellers
This series will focus on books and book-making. We will visit a bookstore, have a visit from an author and learn how books are printed. We will make our own paper, learn about illustrations, and ultimately write our own books which we will share with other children in the community.
WINTER 2008/2009 - Fabulous Fun with Food
The focus of this delectable series will be on food! We will make food and visit local eateries. Local chefs will pay us a visit, and we will learn about the growing process of our food as well.
SPRING 2009 - Wheels, Wings & Whistles
Planes, Trains, and Automobiles - do we need to say more?! We will be riding, walking, floating and honking our horns in this series of on-the-go classes.
