We'll Bring the Museum to You. (It's really easy!)
Standards-based, hands-on science, art and math activities brought to your school by certified school instructors.
Enjoy a hands-on experience for students inside the classroom. These art and science curriculum based outreach lessons are available for all teachers within a 35-mile radius of the Museum. Lessons last one hour or 90 minutes depending on topic, scheduling and grade level. These curriculum-based lessons can be customized for all grade levels. Reservations are required at least TWO weeks in advance.
Lessons are based on curriculum objectives and standards in science, math, or art and are appropriate for your students' grade level. These lessons are appropriate for classrooms, after school groups, church groups, scouting troops, clubs, and enrichment programs. All Creative Discovery Museum presenters are certified classroom teachers. EARLY CHILDHOOD LESSONS
Students 2 yr. old – 5yr. old
These new lessons are specifically designed for the younger child and are set up in the standard centers found in Early Childhood Classrooms. The children will have a short presentation on the content, followed by center time with books, building materials, science materials, art supplies. The presenter will stay at one special station to insure conceptual understanding.
These lessons help fulfill these early childhood standards and objectives.
NEW! GET CURIOUS ABOUT SCIENCE - What are you curious about? Find out how curiosity helps us in science. Books by H.A. Rey are the basis for science activities explored by the students. Use curiosity and planning together to help you solve problems!
NEW! EXPLORING SOUNDS AND RHYTHMS – Can you move to the beat of the music? Clap your hands, use your breath, vibrate strings, and pound on things to make sounds in a rhythm. Explore the different ways your body can move and imitate other animals.
MAGNIFICENT MACHINES – The students can be engineers for an hour as the explore six different simple machines – levers, inclined planes, screws, wheels and axles, pulleys and wedges.
MYSTEROUS MAGNETS – The students can experiment like scientists do as they guide magnets through a maze, test a magnet’s attraction to various objects, or attempt to make a magnet work through water.
WONDERFUL WEATHER – The mysteries of the weather become clear in this lesson. Students get to make and feel fog, design an art project from clouds, and explore the seasons and appropriate clothing to wear in each one. They will also find out how the weather person knows what is going to happen.
COLOR IN ART AND LIGHT – What makes purple? Why are some pictures hard to look at? Where do rainbows get their light? What does color have to do with light? Students will find out the answers to these questions and much more!
PRIMARY GRADE LESSONS
Students in Grades K-3
These lessons help fulfill these primary grade standards and objectives.
NEW! THE LIVING WORLD – Students classify animals by comparing and contrasting mammals, insects, fish, amphibians, and reptiles by their characteristics and how they interact with their environment.
NEW! GOOD FOR ME AND FOR YOU – This new lesson will explore what students need to do to stay healthy. Experiment listening to the beat of their heart and how it changes during exercise. They will explore the functions of different parts of their bodies and what they do. Students will learn healthy eating habits and healthy lifestyles as they see how clean they can get their hands and how to brush their teeth. They will chart and classify foods, what part of the plant they come from and how the different foods are important to their growth and health.

MAGNIFICENT MAGNETS – Guiding a magnet through a maze without touching the magnet is only one of the problem-solving activities students will complete as they explore magnetic force and how it works in different forms and with different materials.
MESMERIZING MASKS – Throughout history, every culture has used masks in many ways. Students have a great time exploring how masks portray emotions and using different materials to make their own masks using concepts of symmetry and color.
ROCKIN’ WITH ROCKS (AND MINERALS) – Dig for fossils, classify different types of rocks and minerals, and learn how they are formed. Discuss what is extinct and not extinct and what is organic and non-organic.
SIMPLY AMAZING MACHINES – Explore the six basic simple machines and how they work together to help us. Learn how early civilizations used them to build great structures without cars and gasoline.
WACKY WEATHER AND THE WATER CYCLE – Become a meteorologists as your students learn about weather instruments, clouds, and the water cycle.
ELEMENTARY GRADE LESSONS
Students in Grades 3-6
These lessons help fulfill these elementary grade standards and objectives.
AMAZING MACHINES – Student have the chance to make complex machines from simple parts and explore the forces used that help us do our work. They will use principles of storing potential energy and using kinetic energy to help them reach their project goals.
GEOLOGY OF ROCKS & MINERALS – What can we learn by examining fossils and classifying different types of rocks and minerals by their characteristics? Where do crystals come from and how do they differ from each other? Learn the answers to these questions and more.
JUMP INTO GEOMETRY – Exploring solid surface shapes in art and architecture while handling solids and plane figures will give your students a deeper understanding of geometry. Volume, area and their relationships will be experienced.
METEOROLOGISTS AND WATER - Students take on the role of a meteorologist and use weather instruments to create weather maps. They will learn about the water cycle while making fog and explore the different types of clouds which cause our weather.
SHOCKING DISCOVERIES – Why do you get a shock when you touch some things? This is just one thing students learn about electricity as they explore conductors and insulators. They will construct simple, parallel, and series circuits and how they work.

SIZE IT UP – How do we know how big or heavy something is? Students weigh various items, both solids and liquids, and measure the amount of space they occupy. They will explore the density of items as well as compare the different ways of using measurements.
FARMING FANTASTIC FUELS – What are Biofuels? Where do Biofuels originate? These ideas and more are explored in this exciting lesson about energy needs for transportation and why we should get away from fossil fuels. Sponsored by

FOR ALL ELEMENTARY GRADES
STARLIGHT, STARBRIGHT, STARLAB – Become astronomers by climbing into the portable planetarium, STARLAB. Students explore the solar system, constellations, and the individual properties of various stars. They will also view various constellations while hearing Greek myths about them.(This lesson requires a room with a cleared floor space 30 ft. X 30 ft. and a height of 10 ft.)
