OUTREACH
MUSEUM A GO-GO
Education Outreach Lessons
We’ll Bring the Museum to
You!
(It’s really easy!)
A hands-on experience for students
inside the classroom!
These art and science curriculum based outreach lessons are available
for all teachers within a 35-mile radius of the Museum.
• Each lesson lasts one hour (STARLAB can last up to 90
minutes for 3rd – 8th)
• Lessons can be customized for all grade levels
• Multi-aged groups should not span more than 4 years
• Reservations
are required at least one week in advance
Each lesson is based on curriculum objectives and standards in
science, math, or art that are appropriate for your students’ grade
level. These lessons are appropriate for classrooms, after school
groups, church groups, scouting troops, clubs, and enrichment programs.
All CDM presenters are experienced education specialists. For more
information on specific objectives or grade markers, please contact
Sue Kral at spk@cdmfun.org or

YOUR PROGRAM:
EXCITING & NEW PRESENTATIONS
NEW! HEALTHY ME, HEALTHY YOU Grade PreK - 3
Experiment
with the skeletal system and learn more about how the human body
works! Students will use stethoscopes to analyze how the heart
beat changes after exercise. They will examine
how their lungs really work and “see” and “feel” a
pulse. Students will be motivated to adopt healthy eating
habits for a lifetime after they play with a food pyramid to choose
a menu for the day that is good to eat and meets the guidelines. Healthy
lifestyles will be encouraged as they wash their hands and hold
them under a special light to see if they missed any of the “germs” (fluorescent
fluid) we gave them as they joined the group.
NEW! JUMP IN
TO GEOMETRY Grades K – 5
Explore the solid surface shapes found in architecture and
art, discover the relationship between shapes and solids, and discover
the volume of shapes in the environment. Students will develop
an awareness of the beautiful shapes in nature. The presentation
will include the creation of an art project using all the geometric
shapes discussed in the lesson.
NEW!
SIZE IT UP!! Grades K – 5
Measure the
room, a friend, and other objects of interest! Students
will weigh various items and experiment to see if liquids and solids
weigh the same when they take up the same amount of space. They
will make a sundial for measuring time and determine whether popped
corn weighs more than unpopped corn.
NEW! FULL OF
ENERGY Grades 1 – 3
Where
does energy come from and what forms does it take? These
questions and many more will be answered as students explore sound
waves, mechanical energy, and chemical energy in the fruit that
gives them energy. They will experiment with static electricity
and conductors, insulators, and the radiation of heat through various
objects.
NEW! SPECIAL SERIES BROUGHT TO YOU FROM CRABTREE FARMS
AND CREATIVE DISCOVERY MUSEUM
FROM SEED TO TABLE Grades K - 5
This
four-lesson series is based on the seasonal growing cycle of plants,
students will learn about the parts of plants,
what plants need to grow, how we use and reuse them, and what time
of year they grow. They will dig in the dirt, grow plants,
play learning games, follow recipes and taste different foods. They
will also create art projects based on botanical materials. The
value of eating seasonally and eating nutritious foods to keep
our bodies healthy will be explored.
Classes who participate
in all four lessons will be invited to a festival at Crabtree Farms
in the spring where students will get to see the gardens and greenhouses
and how the plants and food they studied are actually grown.
TRIED & TRUE PRESENTATIONS
Magnificent Magnets Grades PreK - 3
Your students can experiment like scientists do as they guide a
magnet through a maze without touching it, test a magnet’s
attraction through their own hand and attempt to make a magnet
work in water. They’ll also make scientific predictions,
experiment with different types of magnets, test the magnet’s
strength and actually see the magnetic field.
Simply Amazing Machines Grades PreK - 5
Your students can be engineers for an hour as they explore six
different simple machines — levers, inclined planes, screws,
wheels and axles, pulleys and wedges. They will experiment with
clamps and screwdrivers, send a message across the room using
a pulley, transport items in a wagon and lift YOU using a lever.
Students will also have the opportunity to explore all of the
simple machines in small groups.
Wacky Weather, Water, and the Water Cycle Grades
PreK - 5
In this wonderful weather lesson, students become meteorologists
as they use various weather instruments to gather data and make
seasonal forecasts. They’ll learn about the water cycle,
examine different types of clouds, and produce fog.
Mesmerizing Masks Grades K - 5
Students can examine masks from various cultures before making
their own to take home. They’ll learn different ways masks
have been used both around the world and throughout history.
We’ll discuss how colors evoke different emotions and the
students will learn to identify symmetry and asymmetry. We’ll
then help them envision ways to use masks in today’s modern
world.
Rockin' with Rocks (and Minerals) Grades 1 - 6
Your students can uncover time like geologists do as they examine
fossils, create a sedimentary rock, and compare different rocks
and minerals by their characteristics. They’ll dig their
hands into dirt and sand samples and perform simple tests to
identify rocks.
Shocking Discoveries Grades 3 - 6
Students can tinker just like electricians as they discover static
electricity using balloons, newspaper and their own hair. They’ll
learn about conductors and insulators using coins, aluminum foil,
crayons, and paper. Students will also experiment with batteries,
construct circuits, and learn more about the basic concept of
electricity.
Starlight, Starbright, STARLAB Grades 1 - 8
Students can be astronomers in this exciting lesson that combines
classroom instruction with time in the STARLAB. Your students
can examine objects through a telescope, learn about the phases
of the moon, and create their own constellations. They’ll
also explore our solar system and calculate how far they might
jump on the moon.
NEW! MUSEUM A-GO-GO FAMILY SCIENCE NIGHT
Creative Discovery Museum would like to help you excite parents
and children with a science and math parent night at your school
site. We will provide all the materials for up to 9 activities
serving 300 participants, we train your presenters (parents or
teachers), and we stay on-site just to make sure the evening runs
smoothly. All you do is provide the families! The activities
will include but not be limited to; Puzzle solving, Honey, am I
shrinking?; The Animal Race; Beaks of Our Feathered Friends; Reaching
the Top of the Tower; and Marble Croquet. Please call Lynne
Mulligan at 648-6068 for more detailed information and pricing.
