Discovery Mobile Mobile Science Lab at Your School or Event

Now we have one more way to bring the Museum to you! Our mobile classroom, the "Discovery Mobile" is on the road.

This retrofitted school bus has been equipped with special seating and equipment to create a mobile science, engineering and innovation lab on wheels. The bus provides students with fun, engaging hands-on lessons in the arts and sciences with a particular emphasis on STEM concepts. The bus can accommodate up to 25 students at a time and is geared for children in pre-kindergarten through 5th grade. Thanks to support from the SunTrust Foundation and other donors the bus is up and running and beginning to serve schools throughout the region.

Today’s children are under increasing demands to develop skills in science, math and technology so they will be prepared for the jobs of the future. With a lack of science labs and equipment at most elementary schools and tighter budgets limiting schools field trips, teachers need more resources and support to teach STEM concepts.

Mounting evidence demonstrates the importance of informal science education in meeting STEM goals. A report from the National Science Teachers Association stated that "A growing body of research documents the power of informal learning experiences to spark curiosity and engage interest in the sciences during school years and throughout a lifetime. While a National Research Council report indicated that "experiences in informal settings can significantly improve science learning outcomes from groups which are historically underrepresented in science, such as women and minorities."

The Discovery Mobile will be an important addition to our education outreach programs and enable us to work with students in new and innovative ways. It will help us fulfill our mission of inspiring all children to explore, innovate, create and play.

We currently offer a variety of lessons on board the Discovery Mobile. Cost is $395 per day for up to four lessons a day. Call Nancy at (423) 648-6045 or Sheila at (423) 648-6040 for booking information.
